This serviced Rare Vintage 1964 Seiko Sportsmatic 5 Ref. 6619-7990 marks a pivotal moment in horological history, hailing from the debut year of the legendary "Seiko 5" family. Powered by the workhorse 21-jewel Caliber 6619 automatic movement, this early Diashock model was engineered to deliver the "five" core attributes - automatic winding, day-date display, water resistance, recessed crown, and durability - that revolutionized the concept of the everyday sport-dress watch.
Recently serviced, the timepiece provides smooth mechanical performance and remains a reliable companion for daily wear. While the quick-set date (push-button) function is currently bypassable and requires manual setting through the hands, the movement otherwise keeps excellent time. The silver sunburst dial is in 100% original condition, featuring the early-style applied '5' shield and sharp, faceted indices that catch the light with classic 1960s brilliance. The dial's layout, including the framed day-date complication, remains crisp and serves as a beautifully preserved example of Seiko's mid-century design language.
The stainless steel case retains its original factory geometry, showcasing the distinctive unpolished lug lines and the iconic recessed crown at 4 o'clock. While the case bears the honest, marks of a life lived since 1964, it maintains a strong presence on the wrist and preserves the authentic vintage character prized by collectors. The watch head is entirely factory-correct, with the original dial, crystal, and case ensuring its historical integrity. To refresh its classic look, it has been paired with a high-quality replacement strap that perfectly balances its rugged yet elegant aesthetic.
Collectors highly value these first-generation Sportsmatic 5 models for their role as the foundation of Seiko’s most enduring legacy. This 1964 specimen offers a superb combination of mechanical heritage and timeless style - a compelling and historically significant addition to any vintage Seiko collection.
